Are you hosting a bridal or wedding shower?
Have absolutely no clue on where to begin? Don't fret! Most
showers have a theme or overall motif such as a
"lingerie" or "time of the day" theme. There
are many possibilities and the only limit you have is your
imagination!

"Just for the Bride" Shower
Submitted by: Katie of Bothell, Washington
Gifts for just the bride. This will be
nice for the bride, since the bride and
Groom will be getting gifts together at the wedding.
It's the brides turn to get the gifts!

Honeymoon Shower Theme
Submitted by: dkmorris of Kansas
We will be having a "honeymoon shower". We've been together
so long that we don't need much of the traditional gifts, i.e. dishes, toasters, linens,
so we're finding it hard to come up with something new. TA-DA! A honeymoon shower! Gift
certificates for the travel agency, new beach towels, picture frames for the photos once we
return, maybe a camcorder (hee-hee). FUN!

A Wish Bowl
Submitted by: G.L. of Vancouver, BC, Canada
Go to a paint your own pottery and make a "wish bowl" for the
couple(usually salad size bowl). It can say words like love...friendship..joy
and so on or special words like New York if the couple met there or ballet, if
for example that's where they went for their first date. Then on the bottom of
the bowl it can say "this is your bowl of wishes...for love...for life" Then
everyone can sign it. Or it can also include a poem that's very common. I don't
exactly remember the title but I think it's called "Recipe For Love" and it has
things like 1/4 cup of understanding 1/2 cup of joy 1 teaspoon of sharing..."
and so on.

Famous Couple
Submitted by: Yvonne L. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada
My maid-of-honor threw a "Famous Couple" shower for me and my
fianceé. It was a lot of fun! All the games and gifts were related to the
famous couple whom each guest was assigned. One of the games we played was the
Newlywed Game with a few real couples and non-couples.

Ethnic Theme
Submitted by: Jo of Carbondale, Illinois
I'm planning on getting married in June 3, 2000. My fiancé and I have been together well
over ten years, so we have a lot of the basic necessities. But I have just started collecting
African-related things to display around our home (figures, wall hangings, books, jewelry, etc.).
So, I think an ethnic-theme shower would be nice for whatever culture the bride may be interested in.

Poem And A Picture
Submitted by: Missy of Wheeling, Illinios
My sisters threw my fiancé and I a co-ed shower. They wrote a poem on the
invitation which instructed the invited couple to write a poem for or about the two of us.
The couple was told to type or hand-write the poem on "pretty" paper. When each couple
arrived at the shower, my sisters took two Polaroid pictures of the two of
us and the couple. After dinner, each couple read their poem to us and
then handed the poem to my sisters. At the end of the shower, we
received a beautiful album with the poem on one side of the page and one
of the Polaroids on the other side. Each couple received the other
Polaroid in a cute frame as a gift. It was great fun and I look at the
album often!

Tool and Gadget Party
Submitted by: Beth K. of Guntersville
This is a couples shower party theme. It is basically intended for the man though.
Guests are asked to bring a "tool" or "gadget" to the party. Guests should
bring things such as hammers, a rake, shovel, flashlights, clock, etc.

Wine and Cheese Tasting
Submitted by: Vera Bloomfield Village, Michigan
A wine and cheese tasting shower is fun. Purchase two to three bottles of
two to three different types of wine: a Merlot, a Piesporter and a Chardonnay, for
example. Throw a couple of bottles of non-alcoholic sparkling cider into the mix.
Serve cheese, grapes, crackers and other finger foods. Great for a standard bridal or
couples shower.

A Pounding
Submitted by: Laura of Ellicott City
For my shower, I was given a "pounding." At a "pounding", each
guest is asked to bring one pound of any household product (flour, sugar,
detergent, etc.) Then, the guest has to find a gadget or accessory to use
with that item. It was a lot of fun, and I received some really unique gadgets
and tons of food!

Shower for the Seasons
Submitted by: Julie of Spartanburg
A great theme for a bridal shower is "Shower for the Seasons."
Each guest is assigned a season when they RSVP. The gift they bring is one
that can be used during their assigned season. You can be very creative with this
theme and it gives the happy couple a great variety of gifts, no matter
what season they get married in. For example, for the spring season a picnic basket
with supplies; summer - beach supplies; fall- place setting of china/dishes
for Thanksgiving meal; winter- mugs, hot chocolate, soup bowls, etc.

Hamper Theme
Submitted by: Robin of Ottawa, Canada
Before the shower, have all the guests either
pool their money together or have each guest buy one piece of lingerie (nightgown,
teddy, bra, robe, sleep pants, thong, whatever). Before the guest-of-honour
arrives, use clothespins to attach each piece of lingerie to a length of rope with a
few inches of space between each item. Coil the clothesline into a beautiful white
wicker laundry hamper and tie with a ribbon. Have the guests sit in a circle and allow the
bride to slowly pull each item out of the hamper. By sitting in the
circle, the gifts go around the circle and right back into the hamper
without getting tangled.

Scrapbook Theme
Submitted by: Marelen B. of North Palm Beach, Florida, USA
I have a scrapbook that contains pages that easily come out. I have collected many
photos of my daughter and my future son-in-law and have gotten various
scrapbook supplies. Each guest at the shower will be given just one page
to put together for the bride-to-be. It gave people something to do and
give at the same time.

Honeymoon Destination Theme
Submitted by: Brandie of Gulfport, Louisiana, USA
I'm hosting a bridal shower for my best friend who is getting
married in a few months. The theme I'm using for the shower is "Honeymoon." For
instance, she and her fiancé are going to Jamaica. I'm going to decorate
her house Jamaican style and have foods and drinks related to Jamaica.
I'm sure it will be fun and she will receive quite a few things she can
use on her honeymoon.

Good Luck Shower Theme
Submitted by: Laura of Boston, Massachusetts, USA
This works well for a small shower. Center the activity of the shower
around different forms of good luck. We had tarot cards and painted the
bride with henna which is supposed to be good luck. Plus, she had to be
waited on hand and foot while the henna dried. We also had a crystal ball. Because
the shower was small, I got everyone's birthdate and ran their astrological
charts on a website. We also did an astrological relationship match-up
with the bride's chart and the groom's. Favors and treats included soap
in the shape of fortune cookies, fortune cookies themselves, four-leaf
clovers, pennies, and rabbit's feet key chains.

"What Will We Do?"
Submitted by: Marty of Oak Park, Illinois, USA
We had a very small apartment and had both been on our own for a long time
when my husband and I were married. My mother's best friend threw us a
shower where everyone came up with "something to do" during the first year
of marriage. We received theater tickets, a membership in the local
museum, gift certificates for restaurants, and other things that would
keep us entertained for the first year of marriage.

Tool 'n Tackle
Submitted by: Liz of Fort Pierce
My husband gave our son-in-law to be a shower on the same day
one was planned for our daughter. It was a "Tool 'n Tackle" shower. He is
an avid fisherman and fishes professionally in SKA (Southern Kingfish
Association). My daughter made up the invitation on the computer and even had
separate pictures of a "tool box" or a "tackle box." She gave them out (half
and half). He was registered at Home Depot and White's Tackle. We had
sandwich rings made, taco dip, meatballs, chips 'n dip, and cheese 'n crackers.
They had so much fun. Fifteen guys came! He ended up with tools for their
home and gift certificates for tackle shop. Around $600 worth of stuff!

Trim-A-Tree
Submitted by: Jacque W. of Memphis, Tennessee, USA
My future mother-in-law has a wonderful idea. My shower will have a
"Trim-a-Tree" theme. Since we are merging households, we already have
towels, dishes and small appliances galore. This will give us a
start at creating holiday memories that are exclusively "ours."

Pampered Chef
Submitted by: Jamie of Greenville, South Carolina, USA
Pampered Chef showers are great. You don't have to worry about
anything but buying the food and helping to decorate. The "Pampered Chef" host
does all the talking and your guests don't have to come with a gift.
They'll come, watch a show, and look over the bride's registry. Then,
they decide, at the shower, what they want to get for the bride.

Bring a Rose
Submitted by: Gina of Newtown, Connecticut, USA
In the invitations, my bridesmaids asked each guest to bring a single rose with them to the shower.
By the time I arrived, I had two beautiful baskets filled with roses. It was really a sweet idea.

Spa Theme
Submitted by: Lisa B. of Toronto, Canada
Money was contributed towards a spa package for the bride and everyone was
asked to bring a small spa item for the gift basket. A masseuse was hired
to give everyone 10-15 minute massages and the bride got a 1/2 hour
massage.

Western Theme
Submitted by: Jennifer R. of Kansas City, Missouri, USA
I am the Matron of Honor, and will soon be hosting a shower. We
are going to make the theme "Country and Western." We want everyone to get
rid of their pantyhose and heels, most often worn at showers, and get
comfortable. Wear your favorite blue jeans. Our menu will consist of fried
chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans and mashed potatoes. Luckily, I
work for a family style restaurant, where we will have the food catered
from. We will decorate with red gingham tablecloths, and incorporate
bandanas, and cowboy hats into our centerpieces. We are sending a recipe
card to each guest to be brought back with a good tried-and-true family
favorite. We hope to have a wonderful time and make everyone feel "down
home."

Camping Theme
Submitted by: Brandi K. of Owensboro, Kentucky, USA
We had a wonderful Camping shower thrown for us. All guests
were assigned a time of the day and all items were related to camping.
This is a great idea for a couple who enjoys the outdoors. We received
tons of things that we would have never purchased for ourselves such as
air mattresses, a coleman stove, cast iron cookware, floats, tent,
lantern, sunscrean and beach towels. The ideas were endless and it was
perfect for us, expecially since we both had everything (dishes,
sheets, etc.) The shower was held in the bac yard of a friend with a bonfire.
We roasted hotdogs and marshmallows for smores. It was a wonderful
casual shower that was enjoyed by all.

"Recipes for Love" Theme
Submitted by: Jessica of Norman, Oklahoma, USA
My roommate knows little about the kitchen, and is always asking
friends for recipes. So, we decided to have a "Recipe for Love" bridal
shower for her. I purchased a nice photo album, and sent out three (3x5) blank
index cards with each invitation with these instructions:
- share your favorite recipe.
- share a piece of advice for the bride-to-be.
- draw a picture of the bride & groom.
In the photo album, we dedicated four spaces for each person using the three
index cards, and a picture with the bride at the shower. She loved this
gift so much, and she will always have this momento from all her friends
for years to come.

Tea Party
Submitted by: Kelly of Columbia Heights
I am having a bridal shower with a tea party theme. It will
be more kid-like with dress up cloths, mismatched tea cups and
saucers, jewelery, high heels, and makeup. One more time to play before the
big day.

Honeymoon at Home
Submitted by: Christine of Homer City
We are throwing a bridal shower for a couple who has been living together
for years. What to get them? They both work and won't be able to take a
honeymoon right away. We are going to ask the guests to bring something
so that the couple can enjoy a honeymoon at home. Candles, bubblebath,
wine, scented soaps, chocolates, classical CD's... anything to keep that
fire blazing! Then to keep the theme going, the whole bridal party is
pitching together to get them a hotel room with a whirlpool tub built for two. We're
going to decorate it and place small gifts in the room from each of us.

Garden of Delight
Submitted by: Melissa of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada
My sister is getting married, and I am the maid of honour. She
had three showers planned previously to the one I was throwing, so she had
already received TONS of usualy shower gift items. I decided to do
something different. She just bought a house, so I decided to throw her a
'Garden of Delight' shower. Everyone was to bring an item related to
gardening or outdoor entertaining. I enclosed the following poem in the
shower invitations:
‘Garden of Delight’
Try and try with all your might,
Think of a gift for the Garden of Delight.
They’ve purchased a home; the yard needs a lift,
Please keep this in mind when selecting your gift.
Below are some ideas, just for a start
Be creative, have fun…choose a gift from your heart.
(Indoor/outdoor plants, seeds, garden tools, gloves, watering can, bird
bath, stepping stones, lanterns, lawn/patio furniture, patio lights,
garden centre gift certificate.)

#10 Envelopes
Submitted by: Julie of Toronto, Canada
I was leaving California and moving to Canada shortly before my
fiancé and I were to be married (destination wedding in St. Lucia). I
didn't want to move wedding and shower gifts as well. So, two of my art director
friends threw me a "#10 Envelope" shower. A #10 envelope is a standard mailing
envelope (the long one). The rule was that every gift had to fit in the
envelope. Although I received many gift certificates, many of the guests
were extremely creative in fitting larger gifts in the envelope.

Barbie® Shower
Submitted by: Karent of Trenton
We hosted a personal "Barbie Shower" for our co-worker with
everyone in attendance dressing as her favorite Barbie doll. We had Baker
Barbie, Italian Barbie, Flight Attendant Barbie, Sleepy Time Barbie, 50's
Barbie, Sports Barbie, Hair Stylist Barbie, and many more. We are a very
creative group. The gift table centerpiece consisted of a Barbie car complete with
shaving cream wishes, toilet paper wrapping and "cans" trailing from the
bumper. Barbie and Barbie were attired in tux and wedding gown with Barbie
carrying an overnight bag complete with lingerie. Everyone brought in a
hors d'oeuvre. Instead of a cake, we had daisy-shaped sugar cookies
decorated with Barbie colored icing and matching sugar sprinkles. The
bride received numerous "personal" items and we all had the best time.
For shower favors, we printed the "Barbie's 40" joke that has gone around on
e-mail, printed it on speckled paper, rolled into a "scroll" and tied it with
ribbon, pearls and netting. Our invitations were made on the computer in
Barbie colors (pink, lime green, purple) with butterflies and daisy
flowers.

Pajamas Theme
Submitted by: Stephanie S. of Flushing, Michigan, USA
I happened to be giving the shower during deer
hunting season, so all our husbands and boyfriends were going to be gone
hunting. We decided to have all the girls arrive in the evening dressed in
their PJ's. We did manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. We
exchanged a lot of girl talk (which turned into nice pieces of advice for
the bride to be). We watched the movie "Father of the Bride" while she opened gifts
and played lots of make-up games! It was great!

Moonlight and Champagne
Submitted by: Tricia N. of Summerville, South Carolina, USA
I'm the matron of honor for my best friend's second wedding and I wanted her to
have something elegant and yet a bit naughty! Champagne "gel" candle with
sparkles, a bubble machine and real champagne will set the mood. Gifts
will be plastic champagne glasses filled with ivory bath beads wrapped in
iridescent cellophane. I'm asking the guests to bring one naughty treat to
put into a black satin pillowcase which will be tied with a red satin
ribbon for the bridal couple's wedding night!

Recipe Box
Submitted by: Jennifer B. of Bel Air, Maryland, USA
For my best friend's shower, I bought index cards and stamped
them with the theme of the bride's kitchen (happened to be apples and
ivy). I included them in each invitation asking guests to fill out with
their favorite recipe. The cards were used to draw prizes, and given to the
bride at the shower. We also bought her a box to keep them in. She loved
having a recipe box full of her friends' tried-and-true recipes, in their
own handwriting.

Mickey Mouse
Submitted by: Paula M. of Wells, Nevada USA
Here was a cute and fun Theme. The bride-to-be is a big Mickey
Mouse fan. Her wedding invitations were Mickey and Minnie and so was her
cake topper. I decided to use this theme for close family and friends.
Gift ideas included a Mickey waffle iron, Mickey toaster, Mickey utensils,
Mickey Mouse Christmas decorations or anything you can find that is
Mickey. Mickey does have a lot of things out there for any room in the
house. The only thing I could not find was Mickey Mouse lingerie but I am
still looking.

"Mood" Theme
Submitted by: Julie T. of Provo, Utah, USA
We had the opportunity of having a bride "mood" shower. The invitations
included a mood of the bride. For example, the bride-to-be is in the mood
to clean or for romance. We had a blast and she received a lot of
different gifts.

Game of Life
Submitted by: Heidi of Kaysville, Utah
I threw a "Game of Life" shower for my niece. I scanned pieces
of the game Life® for invitations, etc. Each person was given a career
card and was asked to bring a gift that went along with the career they
were given. It was a lot of fun to see everyone's creativity. We also
had everyone write down advice for the new couple based upon their career
and bound it in a book for the bride-to-be to keep.
