Shower Themes

Are you hosting a bridal or wedding shower? Have absolutely no clue on where to begin? Don't fret! Most showers have a theme or overall motif such as a "lingerie" or "time of the day" theme. There are many possibilities and the only limit you have is your imagination!

Room of the House
Submitted by: A Houston, Texas web surfer
Every guest is "assigned" a room of the house. Their gift must be purchased to be used in that room!

"Month of the Year" Theme
Submitted by: An Anonymous Surfer
Similar to the time of day shower, each guest is assigned a month of the year. This allows the bride to receive seasonal items such as a picnic basket in July or gardening supplies in March.

Bath and Body
Submitted by: Candy of Huntsville, Alabama
Guests should buy scents and accessories to pamper the bride and arouse the Groom.

Personal Library
Submitted by: C. W-J. of St. Louis, Missouri
Ask each guest to bring a book, journal, magazine, or gift certificate from a book store to help build the bride and/or Groom's personal library. You will be surprised on how well it will go over.

Wine and Music
Submitted by: S. W. of Ontario, Canada
I went to a wedding shower once at which the theme was CDs and Wine. Everyone brought the couple their favorite wine and a favorite CD (or two!). It was a great way to stock the couple's wine rack and music collection and enabled the guests to contribute something personal.

Grocery
Submitted by: J. D. of Orem, Utah
Do a grocery shower theme! Give each guest a letter of the alphabet, and have them either use a theme for the groceries they buy (having to do with the letter), or buy random groceries beginning with the letter. For example, for the letter "N", a number theme can be used -- buy 409, V8, Lever 2000, etc. For the letter "Y", a more difficult letter, the theme can be the color Yellow-- buy yellow items, such as mustard, yellow cereal, etc. "S" themes include Salads -- everything you might need for a marvelous salad, or soups, soaps, etc. This is a really fun theme to use!

Sweet Memories
Submitted by: S. W. of Leawood, Kansas
Each guest brings a gift that represents a past time spent with the bride.

Christmas Ornaments
Submitted by: J. of San Francisco, California
At a friend's Christmas season shower, the hostess provided a basket of those shiny ball ornaments and metallic markers. She then requested each guest to write one word that describes a quality of a happy marriage. The bride ended up with some keepsakes from the shower that she and her Groom could hang on their tree every year.

Entertainment
Submitted by: T. C.
A friend of mine gave an entertainment shower. The invitations had top hats on them and confetti in the envelope. The guests brought things like videos, games, movie tickets, etc.

Bed and Breakfast
Submitted by: J. L. of Charlottesville, North Carolina
A Bed and Breakfast Theme where the shower is held in the morning and breakfast is served. Guests bring things for the Bedroom and Kitchen.

Recipe
Submitted by: H. L. of Branford, Connecticut
When I threw a bridal shower for my sister, I enclosed a blank recipe card with every invitation and asked that each guest write down a favorite recipe on the card to bring to the shower. I gave my sister a recipe box which was filled with "tried and true" recipes as the guests arrived. Not only did my sister gain a good start to her recipe collection, she also had a record of who came to her shower as most guests signed the recipe cards and often added notes of congratulations. For the bride, this is much more practical than receiving a cookbook of recipes which no one has tried before, and, at the same time, it adds a very personal touch as her recipe box will always carry a great deal of sentiment.

Advice
Submitted by: G. H. of Troy, Michigan
My maid-of-honor threw me an advice shower. In the invitations everyone got a "post-it note" in which they had to write a piece of advice for me and my new husband. Their gift then had to correlate with the advice.

Some Like it Hot
Submitted by: C. W. of New York, New York
A close friend and her mom threw me a "Some Like it Hot" shower, featuring a variety of spicy foods, dried red peppers tied onto the napkins, and a mylar palm tree on the gift table. The invitation requested gifts that would "spice up" our marriage. Guests interpreted this in many ways by bringing massage oil and lingerie to a Mexican cookbook, taco seasoning packets, and fajita pan, to darling oven mitts. An artistic friend made a sketch of a hot red pepper to hang in the kitchen, too. Of course, other friends (particularly my mom's friends) gave more "traditional" gifts, but the theme was well represented and provided a terrific conversation starter from the first moment of the shower.

Water
Submitted by: R. H. of Columbia, South Carolina
One of my bridesmaids is throwing us a couples shower and she was struggling with a theme. My fiancé came up with the idea of an "H2O Shower." Our guests will need to bring something either associated with water or the word "water." Some of the ideas we came up with were: pitcher, glasses, towels, rain suits, umbrellas, water toys, Waterford crystal, something with a watermark, etc. Needless to say, I was very proud of him for coming up with such a great idea and one I had never heard of. Some really creative items people could bring include water chestnuts, watermelon, water balloons, etc.

Wine and Cigar
Submitted by: K. I. of Richmond, Virginia
In our case, my sister loves wine and her fiance loves cigars. Each guest brought a bottle or some stogies to congratulate the couple on their engagement. Needless to say, more than a few of the bottles were opened that night as well as cigars smoked. We had a great time and managed to stock their wine cellar and humidor!
