Shower Themes

Are you hosting a bridal or wedding shower? Have absolutely no clue on where to begin? Don't fret! Most showers have a theme or overall motif such as a "lingerie" or "time of the day" theme. There are many possibilities and the only limit you have is your imagination!

Memory
Submitted by: P. K. of Edgewater
The guests are to bring to the shower several of their most memorable snapshots taken with the bride. During the shower, the guests are to insert their pictures into a photo album along with a written note to the bride explaining why the snapshot is so memorable.

We Need Storage
Submitted by: Dianne of Mohave County, Arizona
Many couples make their first home in apartments that simply don't have enough storage. We have had a number of showers for couples that centered on storage solutions for apartments. Kitchen storage can be plastic food containers that will go in the freezer or the refrigerator. Closet storage can be enhanced with wire components or stacking units. Home office storage solutions can include inexpensive portable/rolling file racks or drawer sets that can be hidden away in a closet. Other ideas are things like decorative storage items. This is a great time to personalize an item. I use fabric and other materials to cover boxes that can be used to store writing paper, pens/pencils and stamps, but are able to be placed on a shelf.

Toiletries
Submitted by: Dianne of Mohave County, Arizona
Every guests purchases a gift that would be a great addition to the couple's bathroom. For example, scented soaps, bath lotion, bath beads, bubble bath, towels, etc.

"Travel" Theme
Guests purchase gifts that will be ideal for the couple's honeymoon trip. Examples include disposable cameras, toiletries, shaving kit, currency of the country (lire, pesos, francs), etc.

Time of Day
Guests are assigned a time of day and purchase a gift that applies to that time of day. For example, if I picked 10pm, then I would probably choose lingerie since that is bedtime. Or, if I was assigned 8am, I would probably buy a his/her coffee mug set for that early morning wake-up call.

Linen
Submitted by: K. C. of Laurel, Maryland
My sister is getting married and the Groom already has an apartment that is fully furnished. What she requested is a Linen Shower. He has dishes, furniture, etc., but he doesn't have cloth napkins, a table cloth, matching bed set, curtains, or other linen items. This idea may be helpful for others in the same situation.

"Honey, do..."
Submitted by: H. R. of Lubbock, Texas
Couples shower where guests bring gifts for the bride/Groom's "honey" to "do" something. For example, yard tools, "Honey, please work on the yard" or bake ware, "Honey, please bake me something.", etc.

Won't give grandma a heart attack!

"Holiday" Theme
Submitted by: An Arizonian web surfer
Assign a holiday to each guest and have them bring a gift appropriate to the season. Example: Fourth of July - A picnic basket decorated in red, white and blue (inside red, white and blue plates, cups and napkins.

Fitness
Submitted by: A. P. of Philadelphia
A fitness theme is great for an athletic couple.

Alphabet
Submitted by: S. D. of Houston, Texas
Each guest is assigned a letter of the alphabet. EX: if I get "p," I bring a pillow.

Fish Aquarium
Submitted by: D. M-L. of Houston, Texas
Before the wedding, my attendants asked what the theme should be for the shower; they wanted to help decorate our home. So I looked around the apartment to see what we needed. I saw that we had two large fish tanks, but nothing to put inside of them. So my friends threw a "fish aquarium shower". A fish cake, colorful fish decorations, shell invitations...it was great! And we got everything we needed to set up two aquariums -- rocks, lights, plants, fish, food, chemicals, and fish store gift certificates! And as a wedding gift, someone else gave us a much-needed aquarium stand. A year and a half later, we are proud "grandparents" because two of our fish have had babies!

Wet Bar
Submitted by: B. C. of Houston
Several years ago a friend of my husband announced his engagement and the Grooms men gave him a shower. The newly weds were going to move into a house once the honeymoon was over and the house had a wet bar. The Grooms men gave him a bar shower. Everyone had to bring something to supply the wet bar.

Tea Party
Submitted by: S. J. E. of Minneapolis, Minnesota
Because my best friend is a coffee and tea drinker, I decided to have a tea party theme for her shower. We had the guests come at tea time (around 2PM) and we served different flavored teas along with small finger foods such as scones, finger sandwiches, tarts, wafer cookies, etc. We decorated everything in lilac (color of the wedding) and fresh flowers. It was a perfect spring bridal shower!
