Receiving Cash/Monetary Gifts

[ Submit a Receiving Monetary Gift Idea | Reception Index ]
email this to a friend

Although it is never proper to ask for money as gifts (or any other kind of gifts), some of your guests will likely offer them. Here are some suggestions on how to graciously receive those types of gifts.

Bird Cage
Submitted by: Sasha S. of San Francisco, California
I don't normally use a "money box" but instead a nice place to put cards for the guests. It usually sits on the gift table. Some nice alternatives are: a bird cage decorated in white tulle where the guests can slip the card in the side of the cage, a large basket, or you can make a fabric covered and decorated box (larger than 2 Kleenex boxes high) where guests can put the cards through the top of the box. You may also have the bride carry a silk purse to slide cards and money into.

Wedding Cake
Submitted by: Yvonne
At my wedding, I will be making a special container which resembles a wedding cake for the guests to slip in their monetary gifts and/or cards.
I have seen other people just receive them and put in a special place designated for the gifts or hand it to a designated person to hold the gifts.

Wishing Well
Submitted by: Stacey of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
I assumed that this was a national tradition. But in Pittsburgh, it has always been the case to have a table with a "wishing well" on it. It looks like a wishing well - with a slot in it to put the envelopes. That is the first thing people look for when entering the reception hall. The well can be decorated with the wedding colors or all in white.

Paper Maché Love Bug
Submitted by: Caroline of Longueuil
We are going to make a nice beetle out of paper maché in the shape of Herbie with a slot on the top so that everybody can put their envelopes inside our love bug.

Money Dance
Submitted by: Laura of Los Angeles, California, USA
In my culture, we have what is known as the money dance. Sometime, later during the reception, most male guests will dance with the bride and pin cash to her veil or train. Likewise, the female guests dance with the groom and pin cash to his shirt. Usually, many weddings I've attended have this tradition and the couple walk away with lots of money!

Money Dance - Version #2
Submitted by: Rachael of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
At a recent wedding the maid of honor and best man 'charged' each guest to dance with the bride or groom. They would collect the money and limit the time guest danced with the bride/groom. It was lots of fun for each guest and the couple received a little extra money. Well, actually lots of extra money.

If You've Got the Money
Submitted by: Rachael of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
At the wedding reception, have the DJ play "If you got the money!" by Willie Nelson. The guests form a circle around the bride and groom. The bride and groom will need a broom, dust pan and a bucket. While the music is playing, the guests throw pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or paper money. Sometimes even condoms are thrown in. The bride and groom have to sweep up all the money. The money goes to the bride and groom. This is really fum to do! It is really fun to empty the bucket when the bride and groom are not looking!

Birdcage
Submitted by: Kimberly P. of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, USA
I, also, will be using a birdcage in my May 2002 wedding. I will search yard sales and garage sales for an old fashion birdcage, sand it and spray paint it silver (my wedding colors will be sapphire and silver). This keeps the cost low and you can paint your birdcage in any color to match your reception!

White Iron Mailbox
Submitted by: Rebecca of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, USA
For my May 2002 wedding, I plan to rent a white iron mailbox (pretty inexpensive) and wrap faux ivy around it. I will have it set up right next to the placecards table in the cocktail room. This way, the guests cannot miss it as they enter the reception room and they can get rid of their card/gift right away. Most places that rent these will deliver and pick them up.

Money Tree
Submitted by: Lee Marie K. of Newmarket, New Hampshire, USA
Our wedding is set for next summer. An idea a friend had was to have a "money tree". Use a fake silk tree (4 feet or so), and provide safety pins in a basket for guests to "pin" money to it.

Kissing Box
Submitted by: Jennifer B. of Holland, Michigan, USA
At our wedding, we used a Kissing Box. In order to have the bride and groom kiss, the guest had to put money in the box and then place the box in front of the bridal couple. We changed it a little - put money into the box and then place the box in front of anyone you want to see kiss (grandparents or friends, for example). We all had a laugh!

A "Den"
Submitted by: Robyn T. of Keswick, Ontario, Canada
Our reception will have a Native American/Wolf theme. We will be hand picking stones, about the size of grapefruits, and using them to build a stone "cave" aka "den" on the gift table. I'll add a few tendrils of Ivy, and maybe a few patches of moss over and around the den to make it look "woodsy." Finally, I'm placing a couple of Wolf figurines on top of the Den mountain. Our Gift Table attendant will let folks know that cards should be placed inside the "den". :-)
